She had posted about “paying it forward.”

It was nice to see that she takes the time to write back to everyone.  Didn’t expect that, really.

Dearest Julia,

I am happy to say that I did my good deed for the day prior to even reading Nonsociety today, so whether or not I win, I still feel really wonderful about my actions.

It is currently raining cats and dogs in Southern California, which makes holiday shoppers just a bit grumpier than they might be on any given day.  While exiting the Glendale Galleria, I noticed a young woman holding her toddler in one hand and her umbrella in the other waiting at the bus stop outside.  A huge gust of wind knocked her umbrella out of her hand into the street.  It eventually was hit and run over by the oncoming traffic.  Everyone at the bus stop just kind of stood around, not doing anything - no one even moved to offer this woman a bit of shelter under the crowded bus stop.

I walked over and gave her my umbrella.  She didn’t speak English, but her eyes lit up in appreciation.  I was glad to keep her daughter’s little head from soaking wet.

It would have been less of a big deal if I was able to walk over to my car and drive home.  However, I moved back to my SoCal home (with parents and all!) last month after getting laid off from my job in San Francisco.  I, too, am utilizing the less-than-stellar public transportation of the Greater LA area.

So I walked home in the rain.
