Hey there. I am a random reader of your tumblog. I am a Treasure Island resident, actually.
It really is an island…..manmade for the World’s fair back in 1928, if I remember correctly. It’s actually built on a bunch of foundation and trash. We risk liquefaction if there is a major earthquake, not to mention that we are a whopping 13 feet above sea level (tsunami, anyone?).
I’ve lived here on and off since moving to SF two years ago. It was a naval base until 1994, so the houses are all cookie cutter townhouses and apartments and it is completely flat. I live there because it is cheap, we have parking spaces, free utilities, and washer/dryer. Why do we have these advantages and cheap rent? Because the chemicals used to clean naval vessels and such were toxic and have seeped into the soil, and there is asbestos in some of the buildings. We are advised to not grow veggie gardens and not to drink the tap water.
The mix of people out there is………..unique. There is a row of houses for battered woman, art students, international students, cheapskates like me, meth addicts galore, Job CORPS - which is an alternative to Juvenile Hall - and lastly, Walden House - a sober living recovery program for alcoholics and druggies.
I like it, for the most part. And I get to buy 2 for one tickets to the music festival because I live here.

Yay! This was an email from yours truly. (My response to a post wondering about the Treasure Island Music Festival this weekend. )
